Answers to Frequently Asked Questions

Can anyone join?
We accept just one person per profession per chapter.  If your position has already been filled at our chapter, we can refer you to another chapter.  NOTE: You also have the option of opening a brand new chapter yourself.  (Back to top)

Are your members reputable?
Each prospective member is required to complete an application, provide references, attend one to two chapter meetings and complete two or more interviews before being accepted.  Our Membership Committee is responsible for conducting these prospective-member activities.  (Back to top)

What occupations benefit the most from networking?
It is not the occupation, it is the individual.  If you have a vision for your business that involves helping others succeed, you will do well within BNI.  (Back to top)

My profession does not let me directly solicit business.  Is BNI still right for me?
BNI helps its members improve their businesses by educating on how to network effectively.  BNI provides a forum that allows members to meet other business peers who need to know effective and efficient business people.  (Back to top)

Are members asked to bring visitors to the chapter?
Yes, every member is strongly encouraged to bring visitors to the group (especially visitors who work in one of the fields of our open professions).  Feel free to bring your friends, family, colleagues and associates whom you feel would make a positive impact on the group.  (Back to top)

How often are meetings?
Weekly.  Studies have shown that networking groups who meet on a weekly basis average more than twice the amount of business than groups who meet every two weeks or less.  NOTE: You can have substitutes fill in for you up to once a month, and a few absences are allowed each year for extraneous circumstances.  (Back to top)

I'm not sure I'll be able to give referrals.
Most people have this concern when they consider joining a networking group.  What makes BNI unique is the training it offers to new (and senior) members.  This professional training helps develop our networking skills and gradually increase the number of referrals we bring in (and receive).  (Back to top)

How much of an investment is required?
Most new members more than recoup their investment within the first few months of joining.  This is also when membership really gets rewarding as your results begin to grow at an exponential rate.  We have a saying at BNI that goes, "You can't get a haircut over the phone."  So we invite you to come in next Tuesday morning to discover what BNI - La Jolla has to offer you.  Breakfast is on us!  (Back to top)
